About SafetyWorks!
What is SafetyWorks!?
SafetyWorks! is an outreach program of the Maine Department of Labor designed to reduce job-related injuries, illnesses and deaths. SafetyWorks! is a voluntary program --- it is not OSHA and cannot issue citations or fines. SafetyWorks! services are available by request and free of charge.

What can SafetyWorks! do for you?
At your request and at no cost to you SafetyWorks! will:
- Answer your workplace safety and health questions over the telephone or through Ask the Expert
- Come to your workplace to help you identify hazards and find ways to correct them
- Conduct air or noise monitoring at your workplace
- Provide training on many different safety and health topics
- Lend you videotapes from our video lending library
- Send you publications
- Provide injury and illness statistics
- Help you improve your safety and health program
- Help you understand OSHA regulations
Who does SafetyWorks! serve?
SafetyWorks! provides free services and materials to public and private employers, workers, educators, and the general public. While SafetyWorks! will help businesses regardless of size, priority is given to small businesses.
Each year SafetyWorks! trains about 8,000 people and consults at nearly 1,000 worksites in Maine
How long has SafetyWorks! been around?
The name SafetyWorks! is relatively new, but the Bureau of Labor Standards of the Maine Department of Labor has been providing services to help improve workplace safety and health for over 25 years.
Who provides services?
SafetyWorks! trainers and consultants are professional occupational safety engineers and industrial hygienists (including two Certified Industrial Hygienists) with experience working with diverse industries. They have the training and expertise to provide practical solutions to safety and health problems.
Who funds SafetyWorks!
SafetyWorks! is funded through a combination of federal and state funds.
The Maine Safety Education Training Fund (SETF) funds SafetyWorks! programs through a pool of resources designed to support statewide occupational safety and health efforts. SETF is funded through an annual assessment of workers' compensation insurers and group and individual self-insured. Administration of SafetyWorks! is funded in part through the state General Fund.
Federal funding is through a U.S. Department of Labor/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) consultation grant and a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) training grant. The National Institute for Safety and Health and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics help support the research activities associated with SafetyWorks!.
